πŸ¦› A Wild Spring Break Adventure: To Tanganyika Wildlife Park

Plus A Fun Bonus: National Treasure Hunt!Family Trip to Tanganyika Wildlife Park

By By Amanda Miller Publishers and Editors of Macaroni Kid of Rochester April 8, 2026

If you’ve ever wondered whether a trip to Tanganyika Wildlife Park — located just outside of Wichita — is worth it for your family, let me just say this: it absolutely is.

We visited over spring break, and it turned into one of those unforgettable family experiences we’re still talking about.

πŸ’› Meet Mars: The Pygmy Hippo Who Stole Our Hearts

Our story with Mars actually started months before our trip. We first discovered him on TikTok last summer — and from that moment on, Annabelle was hooked. Watching his videos quickly became a favorite in our house, so getting the chance to see him in real life felt extra special.

And let me tell you… he did not disappoint.

From the moment we met him, Mars completely captured Annabelle’s heart. There’s just something about him — curious, gentle, and totally adorable. Annabelle didn’t just get to see Mars… she got to meet him and even touch him!

And if that wasn’t special enough, we also got a nose print keepsake from his mom, Posie — such a unique, once-in-a-lifetime souvenir that we’ll treasure forever.

🎟️ The “Best Day Bundle” — And It Really Was

We decided to go all in and purchase the Best Day Bundle, and honestly? The name says it all.

Every experience felt elevated, personal, and incredibly memorable. If you’re considering it — do it. It truly made the day seamless and packed with unforgettable moments.

🍴 Food, Drinks & Snacks Included (Yes, Really!)

One of the biggest surprises? Food is included with admission — and not just a little bit. We’re talking breakfast, lunch, unlimited snacks, and drinks throughout the day.

And the best part… the food was actually really good.

Here’s just some of what we tried:

Pulled pork sandwich

Chicken tenders

Fries

Chicken sandwich

Mac and cheese

Uncrustables (perfect for the kids!)

Cookies πŸͺ

Popcorn 🍿

They also had some really great-looking salads and breakfast options — although we missed breakfast (mom life πŸ™‹‍♀️) because we let the kids sleep in after our flight the day before.

Everything was made fresh when you ordered it, but the wait time was surprisingly quick — even with how busy it can get.

πŸ‘‰ Macaroni Mom Tip: Bring a reusable water bottle! The cups provided don’t have lids, which can turn into a sticky situation with kids pretty fast.

🦏 Rhinos… But Make Them Puppies

One of the most surprising (and favorite!) parts of our day was interacting with the rhinos — which made it even more special because they’re actually my husband Steven’s favorite animal.

You might expect something intimidating — but instead, they were like giant puppies, happily soaking up all the pets and scratches. Even our youngest, Addison (1.5), was able to be part of the experience. For safety, she stayed in her carrier — which she didn’t mind at all — and still got to be right there with us.

And while their skin felt just like you’d expect — rough and tough — their personalities were the complete opposite: soft, sweet, and full of gentle curiosity. It was such a cool, unexpected experience and one the whole family loved.

πŸ’ Lemur Love (and the Softest Hands Ever!)

The lemur encounter was straight out of a dream.

They didn’t just come near us — they climbed right onto our laps while we fed them carrots and zucchini treats. It was calm, magical, and so interactive.

And fun fact:

πŸ‘‰ Lemur hands are unbelievably soft. Like, crazy soft.

It’s one of those little details you don’t expect, but it made the experience even more special.

🦦 Otterly Amazing Memories

Our otter experience was another standout moment — and it was extra special because both kids got to enjoy it in their own way.

Annabelle and I participated in a meet-and-greet experience, where we learned all about how the otters are trained. One of the coolest things?

They choose to participate by going into their carrier and closing the door themselves. Watching how smart and engaged they were — and seeing the incredible ambassador training — was fascinating.

And of course, it ended with some one-of-a-kind photo opportunities!

Meanwhile, my husband Steven and our youngest, Addison (1.5), had their own special experience:Otter Art Adventure

Addison got to watch the otters paint and create her a footprint masterpiece πŸ–ŒοΈ

They even got a behind-the-scenes look at where the otters live

And Steven snapped the coolest photo — an otter holding his finger through a small hand-holding space πŸ₯Ή

It was such a thoughtful way to make sure even the littlest visitors have an unforgettable time.

πŸ—ΊοΈ A Fun Bonus: National Treasure Hunt!  #TanganyikaTreasureHunt

Here’s something extra exciting for families — Tanganyika Wildlife Park is launching a national treasure hunt, and we’re so excited to be part of it!

We secured a treasure box that will be hidden locally this weekend (4/11/26 πŸ‘€).

Each treasure box includes:

Tanganyika admission tickets 🎟️

A one-night hotel stay

Indoor waterpark passes (we saw it — and it is super cool) πŸ’¦

Plus a few fun surprise goodies!

If you love a good adventure, keep your eyes out… because this is going to be such a fun opportunity for one lucky family!

🌟 Tips & Tricks for Visiting

Planning a trip? Here’s what worked really well for us:

πŸ—“οΈ Go during off-peak times

We lucked out — Kansas spring break was the week before ours, so crowds were lighter. We also visited on a Friday instead of a weekend, which made a big difference.

🌦️ Be ready for changing weather

Day 1 was hot (80s–90s and windy), while Day 2 was chilly in the morning. For our New York blood, it still felt amazing — just needed a hoodie! Honestly, we’ll take that over snow any day.

πŸͺ™ Bring quarters or small bills

You can buy feed for goats, llamas, and fish — and it’s a great deal!

πŸ‘‰ We spent about $2 total for both girls and had plenty for a long, fun feeding experience.

πŸ“Έ Charge your phone (and clear storage!)

You will take so many photos. The staff is also amazing and will help you capture some really incredible shots.

πŸ‘Ά Plan for littles

Bring a stroller or even a leash backpack (yes, they’re controversial — but helpful!)

There are water features and ponds, so having a safe setup for little runners is peace of mind

If your child is under 3, bring a carrier — some experiences require it for safety so they can still participate

πŸ—ΊοΈ Study the map ahead of time

Even without the Best Day Bundle, there are tons of feeding opportunities included with admission — you just need to know when and where they are.

πŸ‘‰ The Best Day Bundle simply takes it to the next level with more intimate, up-close encounters on top of everything already included.

🌟 Why This Trip Meant So Much

What makes Tanganyika Wildlife Park so special isn’t just the animals — it’s the connection.

Every experience felt:

Personal

Interactive

Designed with families in mind

It’s not just a place you visit… it’s a place you experience together.

✈️ Worth the Trip from Rochester?

Short answer: yes. 1000% yes.

If you’re looking for a unique family getaway, especially over school breaks, this is one adventure that truly stands out. Between the up-close animal encounters, the thoughtful experiences for all ages, and those unforgettable moments (hi, Mars πŸ’›), it’s a trip your kids will be talking about for a long time.

From TikTok discovery to real-life memories — and now a treasure hunt adventure — this was one for the books. And if your family loves animals as much as ours does… you’re going to fall in love too. πŸ¦’πŸ’›
